International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures, Japan
CONSTITUTION

1.

Name: The Name of the Association is IASIL Japan. IASIL Japan is the Japan Branch Association of IASIL, the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures. Members of IASIL Japan shall also be Members of IASIL.

2.

Objective: The objective of IASIL Japan is to promote the study of Irish literatures in Japan by means of

  1. The Annual Conference and occasional lecture meetings.
  2. The promotion of cultural exchange between Japan, Ireland and other countries and, in particular, by direct links with IASIL.
  3. Annual publication of the Association bulletin, the Journal of Irish Studies (originally The Harp)
3. Composition: The Association shall consist of the Members, the Committee, the Editor of the Journal, the Secretary and the President. In accordance with IASIL practice the Members shall elect a Vice-Chair and Regional Representatives of IASIL.
4. Appointment of the Committee: The Members shall elect the Committee by a postal ballot of all Members.
5. Appointment of the President: The Committee shall elect the President.
6. Additional Committee Members: The Committee can co-opt additional members to join as Committee Members and assist in the work of the society.
7. Record: Committee meetings shall be recorded and the Minutes distributed to Committee Members and Editorial Board Members.
8. Term: The President and Committee shall hold office for three years. Committee Members may offer themselves for continuous re-election, but the President may only stand once for re-election.
9. Journal: All fully paid up members are entitled to receive a copy, and the Journal shall be edited in accordance with the Guidelines for the Journal of Irish Studies.
10. Membership: The annual membership fee of IASIL Japan with Irish University Review is ¥10,000 a year for individuals or ¥13,000 for married couples. Annual membership fee without Irish University Review is ¥7,000 for individuals or ¥ 10,000 for married couples a year. To cover international postage expenses, an additional ¥500 will be added to the cost of annual subscriptions for overseas IASIL Japan Members: ¥10,500 for individuals with Irish University Review, ¥13,500 for married couples with Irish University Review, ¥7,500 for individuals without Irish University Review, ¥10,500 for married couples without Irish University Review.
11. Expenses: The expenses of the society are to be defrayed from membership fees, donations, grants etc. The Treasurer shall maintain the accounts.
12. Annual general meeting: A general meeting shall be held annually to discuss any matters relative to the society, and the vote of the meeting shall be binding on matters relative to the society.

Changes: Any changes to the constitution must be approved by a majority vote at the Annual General Meeting.

Guidelines for the Journal of Irish Studies
i. An Editor shall be appointed by the Committee to edit the bulletin for a term of 3 years and may offer himself or herself for re-election without limit.
ii. The term of Editorial Board Members shall be 3 years, but there are no limits on the number of times they may offer themselves for re-election.
iii. Editorial Board Members shall work with the Editor in commissioning, editing and seeing through to print academic papers and articles on Irish literature and its contexts and other relevant contributions.
iv. When the Editorial Board seeks new Members, it shall make nominations from the current Membership and the Editor shall report and explain these to the Committee. If there are no substantial objections, those nominated by the Board shall be appointed to the Editorial Board.
v. The President and the Secretary shall attend meetings of the Editorial Board.
vi. The Editor shall serve on the Committee and report Editorial Board activities, requests and nominations to the Committee.
vii. The Editor shall respect Committee decisions on the production budget and general editorial direction of the Journal of Irish Studies.

The remit for contributions to the Journal of Irish Studies shall be as described in the Notes for Contributors printed in the Journal, as follows:
The Journal of Irish Studies is the bulletin of IASIL Japan, its Members and their guests. The Journal aims to document research in Irish literatures and their contexts.Situated in Japan and supported and produced by a broad constituency of Japanese and foreign scholars, writers and readers, the Journal of Irish Studies offers special scholarly perspectives on Irish studies. All articles are independently reviewed before publication.

ix. The Minutes of Editorial Board meetings shall be distributed to Committee Members as well as to Editorial Board Members.
