The Planned Conduct of Face-to-Face Classes for the Academic Year 2021

A message for all students from the Vice-President (Academic), Professor H. Hojyo, Musashino University

This notice details the University’s plans conduct of face-to-face classes for the new Academic Year 2021, as outlined in the President’s recent announcement.

1. Plan for the conduct of classes

  1. The University aims to resume on-campus classes with a priority on the health and wellbeing of all students and staff, while seeking your cooperation in observing the University’s policies to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

  2. The University will endeavor to conduct as many classes as permissible under the strict guidelines regarding the 3Cs. (Eligible classes will be determined based on the number of students permissible in each classroom under the 3Cs requirements. We seek your cooperation and understanding for these decisions.)

  3. The University aims to conduct more than 50 percent of classes in face-to-face, on-campus mode in the Academic Year 2021. That percentage might rise to more than 60 percent should the pandemic be brought under control. There will continue to be a mix of face-to-face and online classes in the interim however. (The University is currently preparing the on-campus environment for a safe delivery of classes.) There may be some instances where the health of academic staff needs to be considered in deciding the class format and we seek your understanding of those whose circumstances may differ from yours.

  4. The Academic Year 2020 was exceptional in many ways and in many cases, the University continued to offer online options for students who, for various reasons, found it difficult to get to campus. From April 2021, however, the University will return to on-campus classes, in principle. For those students who may have difficulty attending classes on campus, for reasons of timely entry to Japan (for international students subject to government directives), or ongoing serious illness, you are requested to contact the relevant administration department noted below to discuss your situation.

  5. The University’s plans for a return to on-campus classes remain subject to the Government declaring a State of Emergency and if that occurs, the University will pivot to online classes. Local governments may place again restrictions on classes and non-essential travel or the University community may be subject to an outbreak or cluster infection. In that case, the University will respond accordingly, resuming online classes, although classes with a curriculum requirement for face-to-face classes, such as practical classes, experiments and similar, may continue under certain circumstances. Please refer to the University homepage for updates as they are made available.

2. A request to those students who enrolled prior to 2019.

In 2020, Musashino University began to implement its BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program, ensuring that students could use portable electronic devices for classes and activities, on-campus ‘anywhere, anytime’.

With the experience of online classes in 2020, while we anticipate most students will have obtained personal equipment, we would request that those who have not yet done so, please purchase the necessary devices and accessories (webcam, headsets etc) as we rollout the BYOD program across campus, and across all year levels in 2021.

As the University prepares the campuses for learning in the era of COVID-19, including computer infrastructure in classrooms, ideally students will be able to take classes using their own personal equipment which, among other reasons, will be important in terms of preventing the spread of the virus on campus.
The University will endeavor to implement the very best education and learning experiences for you, our students, during the present circumstances of the pandemic. We still have a way to go in overcoming COVID-19 and we will continue to respond accordingly. We ask for your cooperation and support during this time.
