Status of Residence

Taking and Returning from a Leave of Absence, or Withdrawing from the University

  Taking a Leave of Absence

When taking a leave of absence, you must have an interview with International Relations Office and complete the procedure with Student Support Office by the deadline.
If you wish to take a leave of absence, please contact the International Relations Office as soon as possible.

You will not be able to stay in Japan under the status of residence of "Student" and you will have to leave Japan immediately.

Important!
(1) If you wish to re-enter Japan within one year, you must apply for a "re-entry permit" at the time of departure.
(2) If your period of stay expires while you are on a leave of absence, please return your residence card when you leave Japan.
(3)  If a non-Japanese international student with a "Student" status of residence remains in Japan even though they are not studying at a university or have graduated, completed their program, withdrawn from the university, been expelled, or taken a leave of absence, their status of residence will be revoked*. If your status of residence is revoked and you have malicious intent, you will be deported immediately, and refused entry to Japan for certain period of time.

Returning from a Leave of Absence

To receive a new status of residence when returning to university after a leave of absence, you must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) before coming to Japan and receive a visa from the Japanese Embassy in your country of residence. To start the COE application process, contact to International Relations Office by the end of October of the previous year if you are returning in April or by the end of May if you are returning in September.
Those who re-enter within one year(re-entry permission) do not need to apply for COE.
