Regarding the Utilization of Generative AI (Chat GPT, etc.) in Academic Learning

To All Students:

The advancement and spread of AI technology are expected to have various impacts on the structure of society in the near future. Currently, generative AI, typified by Chat GPT and others, is garnering significant attention and is beginning to be used in the areas of information gathering and programming as a tool for carrying out work in which humans and AI collaborate through dialogue.

Musashino University not only conducts AI research in the Faculty of Data Science, but has also established a submajor program in AI across all faculties and departments. Our aim is to cultivate talented individuals capable of mastering AI tools that dramatically boost productivity by acquiring knowledge and skills in AI technology through practical learning methods.

On the other hand, it is also true that there are many issues with the casual use of such AI tools without sufficient understanding. Please be fully aware of the following guidelines for the use of generative AI in your studies.
 
  1. <Developing independent thinking skills>
    Human intelligence has enabled us to conduct exploratory activities, leading to new discoveries. 
    Improving your own cognitive and expressive abilities and engaging in problem-solving is important, which is why you should be careful not to lose opportunities to strengthen your own abilities through the casual use of generative AI.
  2. <Cautionary notes on writing reports, etc.>
    When writing reports or other assignments, copying and submitting generative AI responses word for word is prohibited. Be careful not to submit reports or other assignments by copying texts from books and/or online texts (including Chat GPT, etc.) as if they were your own words, as that is considered a dishonest act such as plagiarism.
    Additionally, be sure to follow the directions of the class instructor regarding methods of utilizing and handling generative AI in class.
  3. <The importance of fact-checking>
    Generative AI responses may contain incorrect information. The person utilizing the tool must always verify, examine, and judge the information with a critical approach.
  4. <Prohibiting the input of personal and confidential information>
    The input and output of information in generative AI could potentially result in information leaks. In addition, the information produced by generative AI may contain copyrighted information, which could lead to copyright infringement if used improperly. Be aware of such security concerns, and do not provide personal or confidential information.
 
Technological advancements surrounding AI will transform the social structure at an incredible pace, which, in turn, will necessitate corresponding changes in educational approaches. This will necessitate applied research and practical education regarding the effective use of AI tools. At the same time, it prompts us to consider how human intelligence should be applied. Musashino University will continue examining this issue through AI research in the Faculty of Data Science and learner-centered educational practices.
